Glimpses of Redeeming Grace
The Old Testament story of Joseph provides glimpses of redeeming grace for he stands out in Scripture as a type of Christ. He was rejected and despised, sold into servitude, elevated to prominence, and later became a preserver of life for his people. We, especially note redeeming grace when he made himself known to his brethren. “And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.” – Genesis 45:4
He sent everyone away and met his brothers privately. I think of redemption’s moment and the experience of grace. When Christ is made known to the sinner, it is though the world fades from view and the preeminence of the Saviour dominates the moment. The brethren of Joseph were troubled at his presence. The memory of their sins flashed before their consciences as they recalled their shameful acts.
There is, likewise, a sense of sin when a sinner is brought to the foot of the cross and encounters, by faith, the One they despised and rejected. The Blessed Holy Spirit reveals the beauties of Christ to the awakened heart of the sinner and they, too, come near to Him and realize more fully who He is and what He has done. Jesus too, shares the secrets of grace and forgiveness to those showing despite towards Him. We realized, as Joseph’s brethren, that He suffered in our stead in order that we could have life and real happiness.
The meeting of Joseph with his brothers is an Old Testament story of how Jesus loves and forgives the undeserving sinner and brings them into the state of fellowship and favor. It is a story with glimpses of redeeming grace! – Chuck Peters 10/24/2023
